Penn State women’s hockey: Nittany Lions fall to Syracuse in conference semifinals

The Penn State women’s hockey saw its season come to a close with a 2-0 loss to Syracuse in the College Hockey America semifinals Friday night at Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The fourth-seeded Nittany Lions managed just 11 shots and went 0 for 6 on power plays.

The second-seeded Orange went ahead on a short-handed goal by Allie LaCombe in the first period, and Kaillie Goodnough added a goal on the power play 3:13 into the third period.

The Orange (11-14-10) advance to the conference championship game to face sixth-seeded RIT, which upset top-seeded Mercyhurst 4-1 in the other semifinal, at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Penn State goalie Celine Whitlinger made 32 saves in the loss.

The Nittany Lions finished the year 17-16-4, setting a program record for wins.

Penn State’s Laura Bowman earned second-team All-CHA honors after setting the program record for goals with 16 and leading the team with 31 points. Hannah Ehresmann and Bella Sutton were named to the All-CHA Rookie Team.

Ehresmann, who went 4-5-3, recorded a 2.35 goals against average and .927 save percentage. Sutton recorded seven goals, eight assists and a team-high 66 blocks.
