Penn State women’s soccer: Hayes, Weber pace Lions past Navy

Maya Hayes and Mallory Weber each netted a pair of goals as No. 4 Penn State dropped Navy 5-2 Friday night at Jeffrey Field in an exhibition match.

The teams played three 30-minute periods in preparation for the regular season, which kicks off for the Nittany Lions next Friday night when they host West Virginia.

Penn State leaped to a 3-0 lead in the first period with Weber opening the scoring with an assist from Emily Hurd in the 11th minute. Hayes followed with an unassisted goal in the 21st minute, then assisted on a Tani Costa score five minutes later.

Hayes and Weber finished the Penn State scoring in the second period, with each assisting on a goal for the other teammate.

“The players love seeing the fans come out and it is so nice to be back on our home field,” Nittany Lion head coach Erica Walsh said. “The first 30 minutes, I thought we did a good job of putting the ball in the back of the net and I thought we looked sharp. The big thing was just looking for some different combinations tonight, for the players that made the players around them a little bit better.”

Lexi Ricketts and Hollidaysburg product Ashlynn Soellner scored for the Middies.
