Aodan Quinn scored late in regulation and in the second overtime period as No.9 Akron knocked off No. 11 Penn State 2-1 on Wednesday in the Nittany Lions’ regular-season finale.
The Zips (13-3-1) held a 32-10 edge in shots during the match, but trailed late in regulation. Connor Maloney’s first collegiate goal gave Penn State a 1-0 lead late in the first half. Michael Gonzalez crossed the ball to Maloney at the the top of the penalty area and the freshman trapped it and half-volleyed a shot into the left side of the net.
Quinn scored both his goals on free kicks. After his first goal in the 82nd minute, a scrum ensued and Penn State had a player sent off.
Quinn’s game-winner came from 25 yards out on the left wing. His curling shot beat Penn State goalie Andrew Wolverton to the top left corner.
Wolverton tied his career high with nine saves. Akron’s Fernando Pina stopped for shots.
The Nittany Lions (11-5-1) are the top seeds for the Big Ten Tournament and will face the winner between the No. 4 and No. 5 teams in the semifinals on Nov. 15.
