With eyes set on another deep postseason run, the Penn State women’s soccer team picked up a regional No. 4 seed and will be home for the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night.
The Nittany Lions (14-6-1) will face Monmouth at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Jeffrey Field in their 19th NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Hawks (17-1-2) will be making their third NCAA appearance and first since 2009 after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Assocition’s tournament title. The teams met in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, won 4-0 by Penn State.
“I am very excited about a lot of things right now,” Penn State coach Erica Walsh said. “I am excited about what we have learned, I am excited about building on the experience we have and most importantly, I am excited about moving forward and enjoying this ride.”

The Nittany Lions, one of a conference-record eight Big Ten teams to earn NCAA bids, will look to duplicate or exceed last year’s postseason success, when they advanced to the national championship match before falling 4-1 to North Carolina.
The winner of Friday’s match will face either Wake Forest or Morehead State in the second round on Nov. 22. That game would likely be played in Charlottesville, Va., assuming top-seeded Virginia advances. The third round will be played Nov. 24.
The Tar Heels, Florida State and Virginia Tech joined the Cavaliers as the tournament’s four No. 1 seeds. The College Cup will be played Dec. 6 and 8 in Cary, N.C.
