Penn State men’s soccer: Nittany Lions falter in double overtime to Northwestern

Penn State came close to clinching its third straight Big Ten championship on Sunday but Northwestern stood in the Nittany Lions’ way.

Mike Roberge lifted the No. 20 Wildcats (8-3-5, 3-1-3 Big Ten) to a 2-1 win with a goal in a second overtime period at Lakeside Field. Roberge beat a double team on the edge of the box and sent a feed from Elo Ozumba past Nittany Lion goalie Andrew Wolverton from eight yards out.

Mikey Minutillo scored Penn State’s lone goal unassisted in the first period. Minutillo finished off a rebound off a penalty shot. Eric Weberman scored for Northwestern in the first period.

No. 18 Penn State (11-4-1, 5-3) got six saves from Wolverton while Minutillo led the Nittany Lions with four shots on goal. Connor Maloney fired off three shots for Penn State.

Penn State will play Akron at Jeffrey Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
