Penn State women’s soccer: Top-seeded Nittany Lions upset by Northwestern in Big Ten Tournament

The Penn State women’s soccer team suffered an early elimination from the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

Michelle Manning’s second-half goal was the difference as eighth-seeded Northwestern bounced No. 1 seed Penn State 1-0.

The Wildcats (8-7-4) netted their goal with 20:21 left, with Manning pouncing on a turnover by Nittany Lion keeper Britt Eckerstrom and booting the ball from the top of the six-yard box over a diving Eckerstrom.

It was Northwestern’s only shot on goal in the game.

The No. 6 Nittany Lions (17-3) outshot the Wildcats 16-7. Northwestern’s Lauren Clem made seven saves.

Northwestern will meet Iowa in the semifinals on Friday.

Penn State will wait to see when and where it plays in the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team when the 64-team field is announced at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
