HONOLULU — The seventh-ranked Penn State men’s volleyball team fell to No. 5 UCLA in five sets the Nittany Lions’ season opener Thursday night at the Outrigger Invitational.
Penn State got balanced offense in a tight battle won by the Bruins 19-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 15-10. Aaron Russell provided 12 kills and eight digs, Matt Seifert and Peter Russell each added nine kills and Tom Comfort posted eight, Taylor Hammond gave out 44 assists and Connor Curry picked up 12 digs. Seifert also hit .533 in his Penn State debut.
The teams were even in more than just the marathon score, with each posting 54 kills and five blocks, and the Bruins hitting .304 to the Nittany Lions’ .303. UCLA did have the edge from the service line, 11-4 in aces.
Penn State faces host Hawaii at midnight Friday in its next match.
