Penn State volleyball: Nittany Lions sweep away Purdue

The Penn State women’s volleyball team handed Purdue its second straight Big Ten loss on Saturday night.

Paced by big hitting nights from Simone Lee and Haleigh Washington, the No. 5 Nittany Lions swept to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 win over the No. 18 Boilermakers in front of 4,032 at Rec Hall.

Purdue (15-4, 6-2 Big Ten) had been alone atop the conference standings entering the weekend, but also lost at Ohio State on Friday.

Lee led everyone with 12 kills, while Washington put down 10 kills off 17 error-free swings to hit .588, and added nine blocks. Ali Frantti added nine kills, 11 digs and six blocks, and Bryanna Weiskircher directed the offense to a .315 hitting night with her 36 assists along with a career-high four aces.

Annie Drews’ 11 kills led Purdue, which hit .135 and was outblocked 13-8 by the Nittany Lions (17-2, 6-2), who travel to Michigan on Wednesday.
