Despite a late valiant effort to continue its season, Bellefonte baseball won’t repeat as PIAA champions.
The Red Raiders fell 3-2 to Somerset on Monday afternoon in the District 6 Class 4A semifinals, ending their season. Bellefonte (12-9) nearly knotted the game up in the final frame, but the Eagles (14-6) barely held on.
Facing a 3-0 deficit, Garrett Reiter and Cade Fortney started a comeback effort with back-to-back walks to start the top of the seventh inning. Ethan Corman moved them up with a sacrifice bunt before a Cayden Lucas single into right plated the duo.
But with two outs still to go, the Red Raiders couldn’t get Lucas around the bags. Somerset pulled starting pitcher Grant Norris in favor of Ethan Svonavec after Lucas’ single. The reliever struck out Greg Watson and induced a Tyler Kreger fly out to end the game.

Adam Armstrong, the losing pitcher for Bellefonte, threw well, limiting the Eagles to five hits. But his rough start to the game dug the Red Raiders an early hole. Somerset scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and tacked on another in the second.
