Philipsburg-Osceola’s softball team is just one win away from its first state title game since 2011 — and it just discovered Friday morning where and when that next step to the championship will be.
The Lady Mounties will face South Park at noon Monday at Mount Aloysius College in the PIAA Class 3A semifinals. A win there, and P-O is in.
P-O cruised past Deer Lakes 6-2 on Thursday at Mount Aloysius to advance to the semifinals, while South Park upended Ellwood City 11-0 in five innings.
South Park is the No. 3 seed out of District 7, losing to Deer Lakes in their district semifinal, but it’s been on a roll lately. South Park has outscored its two state playoff opponents by a 27-1 margin over just 10 innings, and cracked three three-run home runs in Thursday’s win over previously unbeaten Ellwood City.

The Lady Mounties and Lady Eagles met in last year’s quarterfinals, in a game P-O would like to forget. The Lady Mounties scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and led 11-2 in the third, but eventually fell 16-12 to South Park.
The winner of Monday’s game will face the winner of Pine Grove and Mid-Valley at 1:30 p.m. June 16 in the state championship at Nittany Lion Softball Park. While the Lady Mounties have played numerous times in the Penn State stadium, it would be their first title-game appearance there since winning the crown in 2011, the first year Penn State hosted the state championships.
