Mid-week HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 5-7 in Centre County high school sports

The high school spring sports season is in full swing in Centre County. Here’s what happened from April 5-7.
Baseball
P-O vs. BEA: Philipsburg-Osceola shut out Bald Eagle Area, 6-0, on Monday. Ryan Whitehead earned the win for the Mounties, allowing five hits and striking out 15. Noah Williamson took the loss for the Eagles, giving up four hits and six runs — none of which were earned, but had 11 strikeouts. Dave Meersand had a game-high three RBIs for the Mounties and two hits. Nathan Gutskey also had a pair of hits and Jeremy Whitehead added an RBI. Hayden Vaughn led the Eagles offensively, going 2-3.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte beat Huntingdon 12-4 on Monday. Bobby Marsh led the Red Raiders offensively, going 2-4, including a home run and four RBIs. Derek Fravel and Trevor Johnson each added a pair of RBIs. Fravel pitched four innings for the Red Raiders, giving up five hits and four runs, striking out three. Gavin Fravel ended the game, allowing no runs or hits, striking out two.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Clearfield 10-5 on Tuesday. Sophomore Wyatt Coakley picked up the win for the Eagles in his first varsity start, allowing four hits and three walks, striking out two over 6 1/3 innings. The Eagles racked up 14 hits on offense, including a home run from Hayden Vaughn, who went 2-4 with three RBIs. Noah Williamson led the Eagles in hits, going 4-4 with two doubles. Myles Stover was 3-5 with two RBIs.
Bellefonte vs. Penns Valley: Bellefonte beat Penns Valley 3-1 on Tuesday. Penns Valley got on the board first, thanks to a double off the bat of Mason Lieb. Bellefonte’s Nick Capparelle grounded out, scoring one run to tie the game at 1-1. The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when Bellefonte’s Derek Fravel hit a triple, scoring two runs. Seth Shuey earned the win for Bellefonte, allowing four hits and a run over seven innings and striking out 14.
State College: State College lost 11-1 to Red Land on Tuesday.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Tyrone 6-2 on Tuesday. The two teams were tied at 1-1 until P-O’s TJ Wildman cleared the bases with a triple in the sixth inning. Parker White pitched the complete game, earning the win in his first career start for the Mounties, surrendering six hits and two runs, and striking out seven.
Lacrosse
State College girls: State College beat Central Dauphin East 16-0 on Tuesday to improve to 3-0. The Little Lions had 12 different players contribute to the score: Sydney O’Donnell (3 goals, 1 assist), Anna Collins (2 goals, 2 assists), Lizzie Paterno (1 goal, 2 assists), Leah Moyer (2 goals), Jena Zeiler (2 goals), Caitlyn Keiter (2 goals), Nicole Zeiler (1 goal, 1 assist), Phebe Herlocher (1 goal, 1 assist), Leslie Powers (2 assists), Ariana Angus (1 goal), Mia Reese (1 goal) and Casidy Cohagan (1 assist).
Bellefonte girls: Bellefonte beat Selinsgrove 9-8 on Tuesday. Elle Macafee led the Red Raiders offensively with five goals.
Bellefonte boys: Bellefonte lost 15-5 to Selinsgrove on Tuesday.
Softball
Bellefonte vs. Penns Valley: Bellefonte shut out Penns Valley 11-0 in five innings on Monday. Lexi Rogers pitched the complete game for the Red Raiders, allowing one hit and striking out 11. Sara DeHaas hit a three-run home run to top-off the Red Raiders’ five-run first inning. DeHaas also had a double and another RBI in the game. Hanna Lauck led the Red Raiders in hits, going 3-4 with a double and two RBIs. Penns Valley’s Kendra Bumgardner allowed 12 hits and 11 runs over five innings, striking out eight in the loss. Jordan Anderson recorded the Rams’ lone hit.
SJCA: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy played its first-ever softball game on Monday, falling 19-4 to Bishop McCort. Grace Rose and Morgan Wolf both went 2-3 at the plate, while Jordyn Rose hit in three RBIs. Freshman pitcher Lizzie Weller took the loss, notching five strikeouts in her first start.
BEA: Bald Eagle Area beat Clearfield 6-1 on Monday. Madison Peters earned the win, allowing three hits and a walk, and striking out eight to surpass 300 career strikeouts. Autumn Tobias hit her first career home run, and added a single.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Tyrone 15-0 on Monday, boosted by a huge third inning in which the Mounties scored 12 runs. Megan Simpson, Hannah Minarchek and London Cutler all hit home runs for the Mounties. Karissa Taylor earned the shutout and the win for the Mounties.
Boys’ tennis
State College: State College beat Mifflin County 5-0 on March 31 to improve to 5-2. The Little Lions swept the singles matches (Daniel Xu(SC) def. MC 7-6(2) 6-4; Josh Davis(SC) def. MC 6-0, 6-1 and David Chong(SC) def. MC 6-2, 6-0) and doubles (Matt Labosky/Luke Shaha(SC) def. MC 6-0, 6-2 and Matias Mostafa/Jerry Zhang (SC) def. 6-1, 6-0).
State College: State College lost 4-1 to Hershey on Tuesday, falling to 5-3 on the season. Hershey swept the singles matches (Andreas Wingert (H) def. Daniel Xu (SC) 6-0, 6-0; Anthony Eichman (H) def. Josh Davis (SC) 6-2, 6-1 and Andrew Schreck (H) def. David Chong (SC), 6-0, 6-2), while the teams split doubles (Jesse Mullins and Charlie Horner (H) def. Matt Labosky and Lucas Shaha (SC) 6-4, 6-4 and Jerry Zhang and Kueyoung Kim (SC) def. Markus Wingert and Faizaan Aziz (H) 7-5, 2-6, 10-3).
Track & field
BEA boys: Bald Eagle Area beat Central 93-43 on Tuesday. Winners for the Eagles were: The 4x800-meter relay team of Camden Comly, Nate Fry, Nathan Spicer and Isaac Dechow; Owen Irvin (100-meter dash; 200-meter dash; long jump; triple jump); the boys’ 4x100-meter relay team of Tanner Bower, Tre Greene, Kevin Taylor and Chase Thompson; Max Yetsko (300-meter hurdles); Comly (800-meter run); the 4x400-meter relay team of Taylor, Bower, Spicer and Yetsko; Matthew Knepp (shot put, discus); Zeb Fry (javelin) and Taylor (pole vault).
BEA girls: Bald Eagle Area beat Central 104-46 on Tuesday. Sarah Holler broke the school’s shot put record for the second straight week, throwing 38’8. Winners for the Eagles were: The 4x800-meter relay team of Anna Cingle, Sara Thompson, Alex Hacker and Falen McHenry; Heather Leskovansky (100-meter dash; 200-meter dash; pole vault); Rachel Veneziano (300 hurdles); McHenry (800-meter run); the 4x400-meter relay team of Franks, Abby Hoover, Leskovansky and Veneziano; Angelina Grieb (high jump; triple jump); Claudia Irvin (long jump); Holler (shot put; discus) and Hoover (javelin).
Bellefonte boys: Bellefonte competed in a tri-meet with Huntingdon and Penns Valley on Tuesday. The Red Raiders came out on top, beating Huntingdon 103-45 and Penns Valley 88-60. Finishing in first-place overall for the Red Raiders were: Jacob Hummel (100-meter dash; 200-meter dash; long jump); Logan Naspinski (110-meter hurdles; 300-meter hurdles); the 4x100-meter relay team; the 4x400-meter relay team; the 4x800-meter relay team; William Spratt (discus); William Brininger (javelin) and John Besch (shot put).
Penns Valley boys: Penns Valley competed in a tri-meet with Huntingdon and Bellefonte on Tuesday. The Rams defeated Huntingdon, 76-67, and lost to Bellefonte, 88-60. Finishing in first place overall for the Rams were: Brendan Colwell (800-meter run; 1,600-meter run); Thad Smith (3,200-meter run); Aidan Culver (high jump) and Adrian Gover (triple jump).
Bellefonte girls: Bellefonte competed in a tri-meet with Huntingdon and Penns Valley on Tuesday. The Red Raiders beat Huntingdon 79-71, but lost to Penns Valley, 81-67. Finishing in first place overall for the Red Raiders were: Kerri Shutika (200-meter dash) and Ashleigh Aukerman (3,200-meter run).:
Penns Valley girls: Penns Valley competed in a tri-meet with Bellefonte and Huntingdon on Tuesday. The Rams beat Bellefonte 81-67, and lost to Huntingdon 78-72. Winning first-place overall for the Rams were: Abigail Stitzer (400-meter dash); Anna Stitzer (800-meter run); Kelsey Hull (1,600-meter run); Jaydan Velasquez (100-meter hurdles; 300-meter hurdles); 4x100-meter relay team; 4x400-meter relay team; 4x800-meter relay team and Allison Sailors (long jump).
P-O boys: Philipsburg-Osceola competed in a tri-meet Tuesday with Clearfield and Tyrone. The Mounties lost 89-61 to the Bison and 96-55 to the Golden Eagles. Finishing in first place overall for the Mounties were: Matt McClenahan (triple jump; long jump), the 4x100-meter relay team; Chad Muckey (1,600-meter run; 800-meter run), Will Rishel (high jump) and Josiah Kephart (javelin).
P-O girls: Philipsburg-Osceola competed in a tri-meet Tuesday with Clearfield and Tyrone. The Mounties lost 88-61 to the Bison and 95-55 to the Golden Eagles. Finishing in first place overall for the Mounties were: Kalista Butler (pole vault; javelin) and Jocelyn Hutton (shot put; discus).
