Cooper Josephs solidified his place among tennis greats at State College High School.
Josephs won his fourth District 6 Class AAA medals with a singles championship win over Altoona’s Chad Allendar on Saturday. Josephs fell behind and lost the first set, 6-4 before battling back to overtake Allendar, 6-3, 6-2 on Allendar’s home court.
“It took Coop a while to settle in and get comfortable, and really, I am not sure he ever really totally did that. It is always difficult to play at Altoona,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “When you have 30 people in the stands vocally supporting your opponent on every point, it is difficult mentally. Chad played a very competitive, error free match, but once Cooper made adjustments and stuck to the game plan, he took complete control of the match.”
Josephs, who will play for a state championship in Hershey from May 24-25, added his second district singles championship to his trophy case. He previously won the singles title in 2011 after finishing second as a freshman in 2010. He won a doubles championship last season.
