Penns Valley nearly nabbed a seventh-inning, come-from-behind win on Tuesday, but eventually fell to Clearfield 6-4 in nine innings.
After trailing 3-1 in the seventh, the Rams (8-9) rallied for three in the frame and had a chance to win when Kevin Butts (2-for-4) singled to left with the bases loaded and two outs. However, Andrew Deardorff, who was pinch running for starting pitcher Cody Luse, was thrown out at the plate, sending the game to extra innings.
Luse (1-3) threw eight innings, gave up six runs on four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts in defeat.
“We had some opportunities but didn’t take advantage,” said head coach Chuck Romig. “Cody Luse threw one of the better games I’ve seen in a long time ... we just had a few miscues that hurt us.”
