Scholastic volleyball: Bald Eagle Area upends rival Philipsburg-Osceola

One point away from being forced to go to a fifth set against their rivals, Bald Eagle Area finally turned the tables and ran off the points the team needed.

The Lady Eagles handed Philipsburg-Osceola its first Mountain League loss in two years with a 25-18, 12-25, 25-23, 27-25 decision Thursday in front of a boisterous crowd.

P-O rattled off five straight points for a 24-19 lead in the fourth set before BEA finally got the side-out it needed and set up Nicole Doroschenko for some big swings.

“We have a rotation so far this year that has scored the most points for us and made some big plays,” Eagles coach Larry Campbell said. “We did a good job of serving ... and we got the ball (set) to Doroschenko and she’s pretty terminal.”

BEA charged to a 25-24 advantage before P-O got a side out, but the Lady Eagles got the ball right back. The last of Doroschenko’s 20 kills ended the match.

“We had the serve, and those are the games you have to win,” P-O coach Dave Eckberg said. “We couldn’t quite get it done. We have to refocus and take it one game at a time.”

Doroschenko also had three aces, as did Tylor Yarrison and Regan Dyke. Dyke also had 21 digs while Doroschenko added 15 digs, Yarrison had seven kills, Chelsea Eisenhuth tallied five kills and five blocks and Jess Bressler had 31 assists and 15 digs.

“We’ve had good competition (early in the season) and we didn’t know how to finish. We didn’t believe in ourselves,” Campbell said. “Hopefully this gives us that. It gives us a leg up in the standings.”

The Lady Mounties (7-2, 2-1) got 14 kills from Abby Showers, 28 assists from McKenzie Burge, 12 digs for Elizabeth Robertson, five aces for Kylie Scovern and a pair of blocks for Emily Bush-Clark.

“Give credit to Bald Eagle — they were more aggressive than us,” Eckberg said. “It’s something we have to learn from. We will see each other again — at least once more in the regular season.”
