Field hockey: State College falls to Cumberland Valley

State College scored on its only shot, but the Lady Little Lions fell 4-1 to unbeaten Cumberland Valley on Monday.

Olivia Watkins converted on a pass from Annie Vidunas to help State College play to a 1-1 first-half tie.

Cumberland Valley, which outshot the Lady Little Lions 16-1, pulled away with three straight goals in the second half.

“We played a strong first half,” State College coach Karin Johnson said. “I was proud of the way we played against a very strong team.”

Grace Prep blanked

Northumberland County Christian’s Bethany Severn had a hat trick in the first half in an 8-0 rout of Grace Prep on Monday.

The Storm (4-4) did not have a shot in the contest. Goalie Laryssa Tricou stopped 12 shots.

CCCA suffers loss

Mifflin County Christian scored twice in the first half and held off Centre County Christian 3-1 on Monday.

Alyssa Maurer’s unassisted goal brought the Lady Bulldogs to within 2-1 10 minutes into the second half, but Julee Hoffman’s second goal of the game clinched it for Mifflin County Christian.

Rachel Campbell had 12 saves for CCCA, which outshot the winners 22-14.

Lady Little Lions sweep Herd

State College won four of its five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 sweep of Carlisle on Monday in Mid-Penn Conference action.

Juliette Greer was pushed in her second singles match, beating Amelia Win 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Amy Poissant also won a tie breaker in her two-set win, and Cathy Badding finished her singles win in straight sets as well.

Also winning were the doubles teams of Caitlin McGlaughlin and Callan Glover, and Caroline Whitman and Cassie Walter.

“Carlisle is a very good team and we were fortunate to win all of the matches,” Lady Little Lions coach Jane Borden said. “The girls stayed focused and played until the end of each match. They finished strong today.”
