Girls basketball: Lady Little Lions spurred by alumni

After a tight first half, the State College girls’ basketball team honored its alumni in the best way it could with a 50-23 victory over Hazleton on Monday night.

The Lady Little Lions were up just 23-17 at halftime, but then turned on the defense to hold the Cougars to six second-half points.

“Their lineup was really short and scrappy, and they came from behind us to force a lot of turnovers,” State College coach Bethany Irwin said. “Once we crossed halfcourt I knew they couldn’t handle us inside. After halftime we adjusted, we sagged into a zone ... and once we slowed the tempo of the game down, it took them out of the game.”

Kyla Irwin’s 14 points and Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh’s 13 paced the Lady Little Lions (6-0), while Ali Treglia added eight points.

At halftime, the program honored better than 40 alumni who helped build the program, with those on hand graduating as recently as last June and as long ago as 1967

“It was a great turnout,” Bethany Irwin said. “I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t sure how many would show up, but it was good to have a game right before the holiday so they could be here.”
