Girls basketball: Bald Eagle Area rally falls short

The Bald Eagle Area girls’ basketball team fought back from a double-digit deficit to take the lead in the final minute, only to fall 47-45 to Purchase Line in the opening round of Cambria Heights’ Holiday Tournament on Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles (1-5) had a tough first quarter, falling behind 12-1, trailed by as many as 14 points later and was still down by nine points to start 11 the fourth quarter.

BEA rallied and took the lead with 45 seconds left, but the Red Dragons (1-6) tied the game, then converted an Eagle turnover in a Koren McCullough basket with four seconds left for the game-winner.

“It’s been that kind of season,” BEA coach Troy Butterworth said. “It hurts to come back that far and come up short.”

McCullough finished with 11 points.

Megan Peters’ 15 points, Maddie Cingle’s 10 points, Logan Fischer’s 12 rebounds and Hayley Giedroc’s six steals and five assists led the Lady Eagles.
