Boys basketball: Penns Valley takes own tourney title

Penns Valley used a fast start to break away from Central Mountain and capture the title in its Holiday Tournament 51-35 Saturday night.

Behind 15 points each from tournament Most Valuable Player Luke Weaver and Outstanding Defensive Player Will Jackson, the Rams (7-0) built a 19-9 lead through the first eight minutes and kept a cushion over the Wildcats the rest of the night.

“We had as solid a defensive effort to start a game as I could as for,” Penns Valley coach Terry Glunt said. “The kids played with a lot of energy. We had a lot of first-quarter steals and held serve for the rest of the game.”

Cameron Tobias and Dalton Ulmanic also were named to the all-tournament team, joined by Central Mountain’s Tyler Everhart, who scored eight points and was named the Outstanding Offensive Player. Alex Garbrick, who won the sportsmanship award, led the way with 13 points.
