High school girls’ basketball: State College romps past rival Altoona

ALTOONA Carrie Mahon capped an outstanding first quarter by drilling a shot from beyond midcourt as the State College girls’ basketball concluded its regular season with a 66-42 romp against Altoona on Wednesday.

Mahon’s bomb from well beyond the center stripe gave the Lady Little Lions (15-7) a 22-14 lead. State College would go on to outscore Altoona in every period.

“You could tell when she let it go it was going to be good,” State College coach Bethany Irwin said. “It was a big momentum thing.”

Mahon spent the rest of the contest running the Lady Little Lion offense. She often found Kyla Irwin, who had 24 points. Bridget King and Ali Treglia added 14 and 12 points, respectively.

“Mahon ran the floor and dictated the game,” Irwin said. “King played one of her best all-around games of the season. You could say that about all of our players. They played with a purpose.”

Darcy Lee had 18 points to lead Altoona (9-11).

State College next will play in the District 6 Class AAAA playoffs on Saturday. A site and time has has not been announced..
