High school boys’, girls’ basketball: Centre County teams learn PIAA first round matchups

The State College girls’ basketball team will open the PIAA Class AAAA tournament against Mount Lebanon Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Altoona Fieldhouse.

The Lady Little Lions (17-7) won the District 6 championship with a 60-57 win over Altoona last week. Mount Lebanon (16-6) finished fifth in District 7. The winner will advance to play the winner of the Penn Trafford-North Allegheny matchup on Tuesday, March 11. The state championship game is set for Friday, March 21, at the Giant Center in Hershey.

In the PIAA Class AA boys’ basketball tournament, Bald Eagle Area and Penns Valley will represent District 6.

Bald Eagle Area (20-5), which beat the Rams 56-42 in the District 6 consolation game, will face Greensburg Central Catholic in its first-round game at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Greensburg Central Catholic (22-3), the District 7 runner-up, was ranked third in the state by PennLive.com last week. The winner advances to face either West Middlesex or Neshannock on Wednesday, March 12.

Penns Valley (19-6) opens against District 7 champion Seton LaSalle on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh. Seton LaSalle (25-1) was ranked second in the state by PennLive.com. The winner takes on Brookville or Mercyhurst Prep on March 12.

The state championship game will be Saturday, March 22, at the Giant Center.
