Bellefonte’s 200-yard freestyle relay team finished 10th as the Red Raiders began competition in the PIAA Class AA Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University on Friday.
Matthew Horner, Grey Rockey, Jordan Newman and Colton Schnars, the District 6 champions, qualified for the consolation finals by placing 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 1 minute, 31.26 seconds. The quartet bettered that time and moved up a spot in the finals, touching at a time of 1:30.56.
Earlier in the evening, Schnars placed 15th in the 200 individual medley. The junior qualified 14th in the preliminaries with a time of 2:01.85. Schnars swam 2:02.34 in the finals.
Thanks to those two finishes, Bellefonte is tied for 25th in the team standings with 16 points. Trinity (105), leads Bloomsburg (83) and Mars Area (79) heading into the second day of competition.

Newman placed 25th in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 55.88 seconds. Horner was 28th in the 50 freestyle in 22.73.
Schnars will be among the favorites Saturday in the 100 backstroke. He posted the fifth-fastest qualifying time of 53.08.
The Red Raiders had just one competitor in the girls’ meet on Friday.
Gwen Lowery took 21st in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:01.85.
Bellefonte did not score a team point on the opening day of the girls’ competition. Villa Maria Academy leads the team race with 131 points. Phoenixville Area (82) and Southern Lehigh (74) are second and third, respectively.
