Track & field: State College relay teams earn All-America honors at national meet

The State College track and field teams left The Bronx on Sunday afternoon with a pair of All-American relay teams.

The boys’ and girls’ 4x800-meter teams each had big days, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Track and Field Championships from Friday to Sunday at The Armory

The boys’ 3,200 team of Chris Golembeski, Mason Post, Kyle Adams and Will Cather were clocked in 7 minutes, 46.81 seconds to take fourth, breaking the school indoor record by 3 1/2 seconds. It also was the fourth-best time ever run by a Pennsylvania team indoors.

The team, running as the Nittany Valley Running Club, trailed only the winning Flyers Track Club of New York (7:40.80), and two teams from Virginia — Blacksburg and Osbourn Park.

The girls were clocked in 9:14.61 to grab sixth with Natasha Fedkina, Victoria Crawford, Kaelyn Yoder and Emma Cousins. Patriots Track Club of New Jersey won in 9:00.62, and the State College team was second-best among quartets from Pennsylvania, with Warrington taking fourth in 9:07.08.

“That’s really something to bring back two teams that made All-American,” State College track and field coach Rusty McCrea said. “On the boys’ side, all but one of the top teams in the country were here.”

In addition, Cather turned in a time of 1:54.38 to finish 14th in the 800 meters in the championship division, while Cousins was 15th in 2:18.56 and Fedkina was 39 th in 2:21.82 in the emerging elite division.

The 4x400 team of Jonathan Smith, Adams, Post and Cather were clocked in 3:23.13 for second place in the emerging elite division, and the 4x200 relay team of Tristan Daman, Max Herbst, Kellin Valentine and Noah Woods placed 14th in emerging elite in 1:32.58. Daman also had a time of 7.23 seconds in the 60-meter dash.

Bryce Williams also had a big day in the field events, with a top leap of 47 feet, 9 1/4 inches in the triple jump, breaking his personal best by more than a foot.
