A head’s up play on the base paths and an on-target throw highlighted the seventh inning for the State College softball team as it held on for a 2-1 win over Chambersburg on Monday.
Lexi Mattavi walked and later scored as part of a double steal in the fourth inning for the Lady Little Lions’ first run. Then in the seventh, Megan Roberts and Laura Harris each reached on errors and then moved up on another double steal. Then Ellie Frey hit a pop-up between home plate and first base, but after the catcher snared the ball, no one covered home plate and Roberts scampered home for the needed insurance run.
After two State College errors opended the bottom of the seventh, and two outs followed, a Carley Etten RBI single brought in one run. An Alyia Kauffman singled followed, and Kialani Killigen tried to score from second base, but Mattavi gunned down the runner at home plate with catcher Sharayah Simco making the tag for the final out of the game.
“The errors put the pressure on us,” State College coach Mike Harper said. “But the defense played well. I’m pleased. It was not a bad start for us.”
