State College loses in quarterfinals

State College opened up the State College Invitational on a high note by placing second and first in pool play.

However, the Little Lions ran into Central Dauphin in the quarterfinals and fell 25-21 to end the tournament on a sour note. Central York won the tournament by defeating Hempfield 30-26.

“We started off with Hempfield, who ended up making it to the finals,” State College coach Kim-li Kimel said. “Overall, we’re really happy about our play because top to bottom we faced tough competition. This is the best we’ve competed in our tournament, which is one of the toughest in the state. It was a stellar team performance and probably the best one we’ve had all season.”

In the first round of pool play, State College picked up a win over Cambridge Springs (25-18, 25-17), tied with Pennsbury (27-25, 22-25) and lost to Hempfield (25-23, 25-23). In another round of pool play, the Little Lions went undefeated beating Emmaus (25-18, 26-24), Wilson (25-16, 26-24) and Greater Latrobe (25-17, 25-18).

Clark Handel led State College with 36 kills and six blocks on the day, while Andrew Groves and Deniz Demirci each tallied 31 kills. Groves had five blocks, 59 assists and 26 digs to add to his kills. Demirci led the Little Lions with eight aces while Parker Thompson led with 79 digs. Noah Christine tallied 61 assists to pace State College.
