High school girls’ volleyball: State College struggles at Garden Spot Invitational

State College posted a 2-6 record during pool play and didn’t advance to the elimination round at the Garden Spot Invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Little Lions (1-0), who are No. 10 in the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association’s preseason Class AAA poll, swept two sets from Spring Grove for its only wins, with losses to Hempfield (Lancaster), Southern Lehigh, and Berks Catholic. Hempfield is No. 3 in the preseason rankings, and Berks Catholic is No. 6 in Class AA.

“From my own personal perspective, it was a good day to learn things,” coach Chad Weight said. “That was a plus. With good competition, we learned a lot today.”

Kyla Irwin’s 21 kills, six blocks and four aces paced State College, with Janae Moran adding nine kills and Sydney McNulty posting six kills and five blocks. Annie Summers also had five blocks, Taylor Kuruzovich gave out 28 assists, Rosie Sowers picked up eight digs and Abby Horner added seven.
