High school boys’ golf: State College wins Mid Penn Conference title

State College won the Mid Penn Conference Tournament championship, beating Cumberland Valley in a playoff Monday at Carlisle Country Club.

The Little Lions and Eagles finished tied for first with team scores of 308. State College shot a 1-over in one-hole the playoff, while Cumberland Valley was 2-over.

Kevin Zuercher shot a 3-over 74 to finish tied for third and pace State College. Christian Friberg (77, tie-10th), Ty Gates (78, tie-12th) and Matt Robert (79, 15th) rounded out the scoring for the Little Lions.

State College coach Keith Bless said Zuercher played his best round of the season. Robert and Gates recovered from rough starts to shoot 35 and 37 on the back nine, respectively.

“I was proud of Ty Gates and Matthew Robert,” Bless said. “Both got off to pretty poor starts. ... If either lost heart or gave up, that would have cost us.”

Campbell Wolf led Cumberland Valley with a 74.

Hershey teammates Jake Reilly (71) and John Abbott (72) finished first and second, respectively.

State College will compete in the District 6 Class AAA sectional tournament at Sinking Valley on Tuesday.
