High school girls’ tennis: State College duo to meet in District 6 singles finals

State College teammates Yvonne Peters-Washington and Cathy Badding will meet Saturday at Penn State Indoor Tennis Facility for the District 6 Class AAA singles title.

Both the top-seeded Peters-Washington and the fourth-seeded Badding cruised into the finals. Peters-Washington defeated Mifflin County’s Emily Hurlburt 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and third-seeded Karen Lucas of Altoona 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. Badding whipped Altoona’s Kayla Letscher 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and second-seeded Veronica Helsel of Hollidaysburg 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

“Both Yvonne and Cathy played well today,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “Their play today is a testament to all of the out of season hours that they put in. It was really nice to see them rise to the challenge, take control of their matches and play so well.”

The title match is set for 8:30 a.m.
