High school girls’ tennis: State College’s Peters-Washington claims District 6 singles title

State College’s Yvonne Peters-Washington outlasted teammate Cathy Badding 6-4, 6-4 to capture the District 6 Class AAA singles championship Saturday at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.

Peters-Washington, who is unbeaten this season, advances to the PIAA Championships to be held in Hershey on Oct. 31 and November 1.

“From a coaching perspective, (Saturday’s) match was wonderful to watch,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “(Assistant) coach Jackie (Gibbins) and I tried to just enjoy the moment with the girls. We all knew this was a great day for State College tennis and it’s something that Cathy and Yvonne should be pretty proud of.”

Badding will team with Juliette Greer in the District 6 Class AAA doubles championship, which begins Friday in Altoona. Cassie Walter and Callan Glover will also team in the tournament.

State College is the top seed for the District 6 Class AAA team championship. The Lady Little Lions (15-0) will host fourth-seeded Mifflin County on Oct. 13 in the semifinals.
