St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy golfer Garrett Bastardi added to his outstanding fall by winning the District 6 Class AA golf championship at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Bastardi, second after an opening round 74, fired an even-par 72 on Wednesday to move to the top of the leaderboard. His 146 total also would have won the Class AAA meet. He finished three strokes ahead of first-round leader Dom Stevens of Central Cambria.
“It was phenomenal,” St. Joseph’s coach John Muto said of Bastardi’s play. “It was tough (Tuesday), but even tougher today with the wind. The wind was just brutal. He was in control the whole way. It was a phenomenal round of golf.”
Bastardi, who tied for first place in the District 6 sectionals, was one of eight players to advance to the West Individual Region Championships at Tom’s Run Golf Course in Blairsville. The top 22 finishers qualify for the PIAA Championships at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort on October 20 and 21.
Bastardi tied for sixth in regional action last season and advanced to the PIAA Championship, where he tied for 25th.
The senior has won every tournament that he’s played in this fall, including the Wheeling Invitational at the Sunnehanna Country Club. Bastardi is averaging under 70 strokes per round this season.
