High school boys golf: State College closes season with second-place finish in district

State College couldn’t keep pace as Hollidaysburg recorded a team score of 311 Wednesday to finish with a 629 to take the District 6 Class AAA Championship at Scotch Valley Country Club.

The Little Lions finished second after shooting a 326 Wednesday for a final score of 645. It capped a season in which State College won the Mid Penn Conference Keystone Division title and the conference tournament championship.

“Congratulations to Hollidaysburg,” State College coach Keith Bless said. “They played very well. ... The highlight (for State College) was the success in the Mid Penn Conference, winning our division and conference.”

Christian Friberg was State College’s top finisher at third with a 158 (78-80) for the two-day championship. Little Lions teammates Ty Gates (80-82—162) and Kevin Zuercher (83-81—164) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Matt Robert recorded an 83 to round out State College’s scoring Wednesday. He and Ben Gelenberg (78-89) each finished with a 167 for the tournament.

Hollidaysburg teammates Isaac Wood (74-73—147) and Jesse Ottaway (76-79—155) finished first and second, respectively. They advance to regional play at Tom’s Run Country Club on Tuesday. Hollidaysburg advances to the PIAA Sub Regional match on Friday at Treasure Lake Country Club.
