High school boys golf: Bastardi qualifies for state championships

Garrett Bastardi tied for sixth place and advanced to the PIAA Championships after Tuesday’s round at the PIAA West Region Golf Championship.

The St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy senior posted a 6-over 78 at Tom’s Run Golf Course at Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort. He is one of six golfers from District 6 to make the cut of the top 22 boys to advance to the state championship in Class AA.

The PIAA finals will be held next Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York.

“He’s had the goal since we walked out of states last year,” St. Joseph’s coach John Muto said of Bastardi competing for the PIAA title. “He’s been on a mission ever since.”

The District 6 champion was one of seven golfers to card a 78. Starting on the fifth hole as part of a shotgun start to the round, Bastardi was in the hunt for the top until his final hole, the par-5 fourth, on which he posted a triple-bogey eight.

It was his only rough hole after posting three birdies and six bogies over the rest of the course.

Bastardi tied for 25th at 22-over 164 at last year’s state tournament.
