High school girls’ tennis: State College claims District 6 title

Thanks to a singles sweep, the State College tennis team rolled to the District 6 Class AAA Team Tennis Championship with a 3-0 triumph against Hollidaysburg on Wednesday at Penn State’s Sarni Tennis Center.

With the singles sweep, the doubles competition was not played.

None of the Lady Little Lion singles players lost more than two games in any set. The three matches ended within 15 minutes of each other.

No. 3 Cathy Badding was the first to finish, knocking off Maisie Supp 6-2, 6-1. No. 1 Yvonne Peters-Washington followed by defeating Veronica Helsel 6-2, 6-2 . Second-seeded Lilijana Peters-Semak closed out the sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Sierra Cobler.

The Lady Little Lions improved to 17-0 and open PIAA play on Tuesday in Altoona.

“This was a nice win for this team,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “We will have a tough road ahead in our first round PIAA match where we will face either Peters Township or Mount Lebanon so we will have to continue to stay focused. We will have to work hard and challenge each other in practices.

“This is an interesting team this year and they have had a bit of a different approach when it comes to working as a team but it’s worked so far. Some of the girls have worked really hard to bring it together and make it a team sport. If we can all buy in, we are very talented and we could have a great run in PIAA’s.”
