High school girls tennis: State College falls in PIAA opener

The State College girls’ tennis team’s season came to an end with its first loss Tuesday.

The Lady Little Lions fell 3-2 to Mount Lebanon in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament. State College won the District 6 Class AAA championship and finished the year 17-1.

“It’s been a great season for this team,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “They are the first State High girls’ team since 1989 to win a D-6 team title. 17-1 and among the top 16 teams in the state is something these girls should be very proud of.”

State College’s Yvonne Peters-Washington defeated Skylar Morgan 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Peters-Washington is undefeated at No. 1 singles and will compete in the PIAA Class AAA Singles tournament starting Oct. 31.

Cathy Badding also picked up a win for the Lady Little Lions, beating Morgan Happe 6-0, 6-1. State College’s Lilijana Peters-Semak lost to Kristi Riley 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2.

Mount Lebanon swept doubles play against State College.

Lady Little Lions duo Juliette Greer and Cassie Walter fell 6-2, 6-4 to Christine Laderer and Marikate Reese, while Callan Glover and Elizabeth Easterling lost 6-0, 6-1 to Lauren Carey and Brooke Warshaw.

Mount Lebanon advances to face Harriton in the quarterfinals on Friday.
