High school wrestling: Emel takes eighth at tourney for St. Joseph’s

Austin Emel finished eighth as the only wrestler to medal for St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy on Tuesday at the Mount Mat Madness wrestling tournament.

Emel lost in a major decision in his opening bout at 152 pounds, then came back with three straight falls in wrestlebacks, the first two in 35 seconds and the third in 1:45. Emel then dropped a 7-1 decision to Michael Budock of Glenelg in the consolation quarterfinals, and was pinned in 2:30 in the seventh-place bout by Joe Rocca of Queen of Peace.

The event at Mount St. Joseph’s High School in Baltimore featured 32 teams from five states and Washington, D.C.

Max Wortman lost his first bout at 113 pounds, won his first consolation match in a 56-second fall, then dropped a technical fall in his second-round consolation bout. Teammate Joey Wheeler also lost two bouts at 106 for the Wolves.

Archbishop Spalding of Severn, Md., won the team title with 172.5 points, with Georgetown Prep of Washington second at 146.5.
