Led by undefeated days from Corey Hazel, and Jared and Andrew Hurd, the Penns Valley wrestling team posted a 3-2 team record at the Anthracite Duals at Panther Valley High School on Saturday.
Curtis Decker added a 4-1 record as every Ram earned at least one win, and Penns Valley 3-6) earnied its first three wins of the season.
“We’re looking better,” Rams coach Joel Brinker said. “Everybody is improving, everybody got a ‘W.’ We’re looking forward to the second half of the season.”
The day started with a 54-21 win against Wilson Area, with pins from Jared Bressler, Decker, Jared Hurd, Isaac Bierly, Allen Cain and Hazel.
A 36-31 loss to North Schuylkill followed. The Rams led for most of the match, but pins in each of the final three bouts let the Spartans rally. Decker, Hazel and Andrew Hurd picked up pins.
Penns Valley then dominated Williams Valley 60-24, with pins from Decker, Corey Confer, Jared Hurd and Bierly.
The Rams dispatched tournament host Panther Valley in the next match 50-21. Andrew Hurd, Decker, Cain, Cory Rimmey, Hazel, Lucas Sharer and Darren Yearick all earned wins by fall. Jared Hurd added a win by technical fall.
Penns Valley’s day ended with a 45-27 loss to Tri Valley, with Sharer and Hazel earning the lone pins, Andrew Hurd winning by decision and forfeit wins for Jared Hurd and Yearick.
The Rams are back on the mat Tuesday to host Clearfield and to celebrate their Hall of Fame Night with the induction of Marty Ilgen and Aaron Smith.
