Girls’ basketball: Philipsburg-Osceola routs West Branch as Showers joins 1,000-point club

Abby Showers surpassed the 1,000-point milestone as she led the Philipsburg-Osceola girls’ basketball team to a 59-39 rout of West Branch on Wednesday.

After a 26-point effort Tuesday, Showers needed 12 to become the seventh player in school history and first since Taylor Harpster in 2010 to reach 1,000. She got off to a blazing start with nine in the first quarter as the Lady Mounties raced to a 21-8 lead. Showers hit the mark in the second period and kept on rolling.

“She knew coming into the week that she was closing in on it,” P-O coach Doug Myers said. “She was more concerned with trying to get us a win.”

Myers said his team benefited from Tuesday’s second-half rally against Clearfield as the Lady Mounties rallied from a 30-point halftime deficit to fall by six.

“The second half really carried over,” Myers said. “It was a good team effort. Abby’s teammates really wanted her to get that goal.”

Showers nailed three 3-pointers in her big night. Haylee Hayward added nine points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Mounties (5-7).

Taylor Pedmo had 11 to pace West Branch (3-8).
