High school girls’ basketball: State College over powers Harrisburg

Maggie Hurley scored a career-high 17 points to help the State College girls’ basketball team drop Harrisburg 54-45 Saturday afternoon in Mid Penn Conference action.

Hurley scored 15 of her 17 points after halftime, with her other bucket a buzzer-beater to end the first half and knot the game at 20-20. The Lady Little Lions (11-5, 8-3) then pulled away by outscoring the Cougars 18-9 in the third quarter.

“The girls executed really well in the third quarter,” coach Betheny Irwin said. “We switched to a 2-3 zone defensively. They were hurting us on the offensive boards in the first half. They only had two offensive rebounds in the second half.”

Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh added 14 points and Kyla Irwin netted 13 for State College.

“Everybody hit some big shots in the third quarter,” Bethany Irwin said. “It was a good team win.”

Tysha Brown’s 22 points paced Harrisburg (9-8, 6-6).
