Faced with a double-digit halftime deficit and limited scoring Monday night, the Penns Valley boys’ basketball team was undeterred.
Zach Engle led the Rams’ comeback for a 46-40 overtime victory over Bellefonte.
The 6-foot-7 junior scored a game-high 26 points, including all of his team’s first-half points, when they trailed 23-12 at the break.
But more Rams got into the scoring, and they surged into the lead before a Red Raider put-back barely beat the horn to end regulation and send the game to overtime. Engle, Logan Pearce, Andrew Tobias and Sean Beamesderfer all scored two points during the extra frame to lock up the win.

“We didn’t shoot exceptionally well in the first half,” Rams coach Terry Glunt said. “Zach Engle — he basically said, ‘I’ve got the first half covered.’ We got after it a bit more in the second half, and that defensive led to some offense.”
Johnson and Tobias each added six points for Penns Valley (14-4), which committed just four turnovers and also learned it is the No. 3 seed for the District 6 Class AA playoffs which begin next week.
Trent Fortney also had a big night, netting 23 points for the Red Raiders (7-11), including 15 points in the first half.
