Boys’ basketball: Penns Valley heating up as playoffs near, knocks off Tyrone

Penns Valley won’t begin its District 6 Class AA playoff push until next week but the Rams are already playing playoff basketball.

Penns Valley (15-4) won its third-straight and second against a vaunted opponent by beating Class AA’s top-seeded Tyrone 53-41 on Wednesday night. The win followed victories over a scrappy Bellefonte team and strong Clearfield squad.

“I think we’ve had a few wins down the stretch here against some really good schools,” Penns Valley coach Terry Glunt said. “Clearfield and Tyrone were good wins and Bellefonte’s a good team. That one moved us forward as well.”

On Wednesday night, the Rams moved themselves forward after finding themselves tied with the Golden Eagles (17-3) at halftime. A 15-8 run opened up a 30-23 lead and the Rams never looked back. They finished strong with a 23-18 run.

“It was a nice win for our guys who came through with a big third quarter to create some separation and hold on for a very nice win,” Glunt said.

Logan Pearce led Penns Valley with 19 points and Logan Johnson added 18. Anthony Politza led Tyrone with 13 points.

Penns Valley, the No. 3 seed, will play No. 14 Bishop McCort in the first round of districts on Monday at Huntingdon.

“I think the guys are playing decently right now,” Glunt said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do in districts.”
