A handful of Bellefonte swimmers made their way into the finals of the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships on Wednesday where they posted strong finishes on Day 1.
Colton Schnars swam his way into the finals of the 100-meter butterfly with a preliminary time of 52.25 then bettered that by nearly a second with a 51.38 in the finals. Schnars’ time was good for third in the state inside Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. York Suburban’s Matt Spinello edged Schnars for second with a time of 51.37 but they were both beaten handily by champion Brent Benedict of Corry Area with a time of 48.41.
Schnars also lent his abilities to the Red Raiders 200 medley relay team. He, Patrick Scordato, Chance Foster and Grey Rockey took turns in the 200-meter medley relay and finished 11th with a time of 1:40.97 in the finals.
Bellefonte’s boys’ team is in 18th overall with 28 points after Day 1 with Bloomsburg leading Class AA with 106 points.
Miranda Fedor will be in action Thursday in the 100-meter backstroke. Scordato will return to the pool for the 500-meter freestyle and will join Schnars, Rockey and Finn Nixdorf for the 400-meter relay. Schnars will also compete in the 100-meter backstroke. Swimming starts at 9 a.m.
