The State College boys’ tennis team did not drop a set as the Little Lions opened the season with a 5-0 romp against Mechanicsburg on Monday.

No. 1 Dan Schull had the tightest match of the afternoon as he scored a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Sam Eisenhower. No. 2 Matt Wherley (6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 Fernando del Castillo (6-1, 6-1) cruised in the remaining two singles matches.

The Little Lions completely dominated the doubles. Sam Wherley and Nick Vanden rolled 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, while Enrique del Castillo and Lucas Forest triumphed 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.

“This was a nice start against a solid team for our guys,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “We have a very young team and we will look to captains Garrett Rabian, Sam Wherley, Shreyas Radhakrishna, and Enrique del Castillo to provide the leadership that this young squad will need. It should be a very fun season.”

The Little Lions travel to Central Dauphin East on Wednesday.
