State College nearly finished an opening day comeback Tuesday but fell short in the eighth to Red Land 8-7.
Hannah Shields (0-1) took the loss despite a strong showing with six strikeouts and a solid effort from her offense. Seven of State College’s nine starters notched hits with five of them turning in multi-hit afternoons. But the Lady Little Lions were shaky defensively in the fifth where Red Land scored four unearned runs on four State College errors.
“I was pretty pleased with how we played overall,” State College coach Mike Harper said. “We had one bad defensive inning. When you give up four errors in one inning it’s going to hurt you. Hannah pitched well enough to win we just didn’t play well defensively when we needed too.”
State College picked up three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game but a walk-off home run ended the game.
