Top-seeded Matt Wherley beat State College teammate and No. 3 seed Dan Shull 6-1, 6-2 to capture the District 6 Class AAA boys’ tennis singles championship Saturday.

“Matt is a solid player, a very good ball striker and he constructs his points well,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “Dan worked to try to control points, but was really never able to take charge at any point in the match. Dan is a solid athlete, but Matt proved to be the better player today. It’s always hard to play a teammate in an event like this but the guys did a nice job of handling the situation.”

Wherley will compete in the PIAA Singles Championship in Hershey from May 22-23, while Shull will compete with Nick Vanden in the District 6 Class AAA doubles tournament. Fernando del Castillo and Sebastian Forest will also compete in the district doubles tournament, which begins Friday at 10 a.m. at the Leopold Center in Altoona.

State College earned the No. 1 seed in the District 6 Class AAA team championships. The Little Lions will face the winner of the opening-round match between No. 4 Hollidaysburg and No. 5 DuBois on Tuesday, May 12 at State College at 4 p.m. No. 2 Altoona and No. 3 Mifflin County are set to play in the other semifinal.
