High school boys tennis: State College wins District 6 Class AAA championship

The State College boys’ tennis team beat Altoona 4-1 to win the District 6 Class AAA championship on Thursday.

“The guys came out strong and with a great attitude and good composure,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “They knew that had a tough match ahead, stayed focused and executed well.”

State College’s Matt Wherley beat Chad Allender 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

“Matt Wherley played like a champion today and was in control throughout his match,” Borden said.

Little Lion Nick Vanden defeated Kyle Good 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

State College duo Matt Bristol and Lucas Forest beat Jon Scheinberg and Tom Houk 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Little Lion pair Sam Wherley and Fernando del Castillo clinched the title with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 win over Ryan Good and Jon Keating.

In the last match, State College’s Dan Shull lost to Altoona’s Jake Colledge 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

State College will face Mount Lebanon on Tuesday at Altoona in the first round of the PIAA Championships.

“We will have our work cut out for us on Tuesday, but our guys will continue to work hard and will be ready to compete,” Borden said. “This is a young, talented group led by a group of senior captains who have been amazing this season.”
