High school boys tennis: State College falls in first round of PIAA tournament

The State College boys’ tennis team fell 4-1 to Mt. Lebanon in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA Team Championships on Tuesday.

Nick Vanden earned the lone win for the Little Lions, beating Mike Wilke 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Mt. Lebanon’s Christian Vietmeier defeated Matt Wherley 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Charlie Strohl beat State College’s Dan Shull 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Blue Devils also won both doubles matches.

“To finish as one of the top 16 teams in the state is pretty good,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “We have a very young and talented team and they have great potential.”

Mt. Lebanon will face Conestoga in the quarterfinals Friday in Hershey. Conestoga beat Manheim Township 5-0 in its first-round match.

The Little Lions finished the season with a 15-2 record.

Wherley will compete in the PIAA Class AAA Singles Championships in Hershey from May 22-23.
