Kayaker Caleb Henry, 13, is a Centre Daily Times Athlete of the Week.
Henry, who started kayaking less than a year ago, recently accomplished two feats of paddling — performing the Eskimo Roll. At the Burnham YMCA pool, he accomplished the complete 360-degree Eskimo roll with a paddle, not only once but 63 times. He later accomplished the roll by hands only 10 times. Both accomplishments came in the space of slightly more an hour training time. The roll is an important whitewater safety skill. Only a few paddlers in the country can roll a kayak with their hands only.
Henry started paddling last August but competed in three of the Penn Cup Slaloms. At the Sunnyside Slalom in Bellefonte, he took third place in the U12 class as a 12-year old. He then took fourth in U14 kayak and third in U12 singles canoe at the Fiddlers Elbow Slalom in Hummelstown. At the Bellefonte slalom, he again was third in the U12 kayak class.
