State College Spikes: Renegades beat Spikes in extra innings

The State College Spikes battled back from two deficits to send the game to extra innings, but the Hudson Valley Renegades pulled out a 7-6 win in the tenth inning on Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Granden Goetzman’s bunt single and ensuing throwing error by State College reliever Jhonny Polanco allowed Oscar Hernandez to score the game-winning run for the Renegades.

Steven Ramos went 3-for-5 and scored two runs for State College (14-11). Cesar Valera, Bruce Caldwell and Ronald Castillo each went 2-for-4 for the Spikes, who have lost three straight after winning four in a row last week.

The Spikes trail Jamestown (16-10) by 1.5 games for first place in the New York-Penn League’s Pinckney division.

Ramos now has six hits in three games and leads the Spikes in batting average at .397.

Hudson Valley’s Eli Echarry (3-1) got a win and a blown save in four innings after Mason Katz scored the game-tying run in the eighth.

State College starter Kevin Herget gave the Renegades (15-12) an early lead after Hernandez hit a three-run homer to left field in the first inning. Herget pitched four innings, gave up six hits and three earned runs.

Polanco (0-1) took the loss for the Spikes after going two-plus innings and allowing the winning run, which was unearned, on a total of three hits and two walks. The right-hander also struck out one.

Ariel Soriano and Jonathan Quinonez each had three hits for the Renegades, with Soriano adding a double and a stolen base.

The Spikes and Renegades will play again Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Left-hander Ben O’Shea (3-1) takes the mound for State College. Right-hander Aaron Griffin (2-0) is slated to start for Hudson Valley.

When the series with the Renegades ends Monday, the Spikes will have Tuesday off before playing the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) at home Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
