State College Spikes: Marmol to return as manager

Oliver Marmol led the State College Spikes to their best record ever and their first New York-Penn League playoff berth.

The 27-year-old will be back for another season.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Wednesday that Marmol will return as the team’s manager in 2014. Also returning to the Spikes’ bench next season will be pitching coach Dernier Orozco, hitting coach Ramon Ortiz and head athletic trainer Dan Martin.

The Spikes finished with the league’s best regular-season record at 48-27 and reached the NYPL playoffs for the first time in club history by winning the Pinkney Division crown. They defeated Jamestown 2-1 in the best-of-three semifinals before falling 2-1in the NYPL Championship Series against Tri-City .

Marmol enters his third season as a manager in the Cardinals’ player development system, and his eighth overall with St. Louis, including his four-year playing career from 2007-10.

Orozco enters his ninth season as a pitching coach in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, his third in the New York-Penn League, and his second with the Spikes. Last season, the Venezuela native guided the Pinckney Division-champion Spikes pitching staff to the best team ERA in the New York-Penn League at 2.80.

Ortiz, also a native of Venezuela, returns for his second season as hitting coach with the Spikes, and enters his 24th seasons as a minor league instructor. Under his tutelage, the Spikes led the league in batting average (.275), slugging percentage (.391) and on-base percentage (.345) and finished second in runs per game (4.72).

Martin will return for his second season with State College and his third overall with the Cardinals.

The Spikes will open the 2014 season on June 13 at Williamsport before returning home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park the following night to host the Crosscutters.
