The State College Spikes and the New York-Penn League will be holding a scholarship competition this summer, with over $10,000 to be awarded.
The NYPL Scholarship Contest, in its seventh year, is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league's footprint who has been accepted at a two- or four-year college or university, vocational school or technical education institution. The scholarship contest will be based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact the Spikes and Minor League Baseball have had on applicants’ lives.
The two-stage contest first will be judged locally, and then on a divisional basis. The winner from among Spikes fans will compete against the winners of other members of the NYPL’s Pinckney Division — the Auburn Doubledays, Batavia Muckdogs, Mahoning Valley Scrappers, West Virginia Black Bears and Williamsport Crosscutters — for a $2,500 scholarship. The team winners who do not win the divisional prize will each receive a $250 book award.
The deadline to apply for the contest is June 26, the winner will be selected in July and will be honored at a home game in August.
Official applications may be obtained at statecollegespikes.com or newyork-pennleague.com, or in person at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
