Spikes pitching shuts down Scrappers

Three State College pitchers combined on a shutout as the Spikes beat Mahoning Valley 6-0 at Eastwood Field on Thursday night.

Jorge Rodriguez struck out six and walked two while limiting the Scrappers to one hit in five innings to earn the win. Kender Villegas pitched three scoreless innings of relief, and Tyler Bray close it with a scoreless ninth.

Leobaldo Pina went 3 for 5 with home run to lead the Spikes, who finished with 11 hits. Casey Grayson and Thomas Spitz each had two hits for the State College (2-5).

Mahoning Valley starter Jose Zapata allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in three innings to take the loss. The Scrappers (3-4) used five relievers in the final six innings.

The Spikes got on the board in the second inning after Grayson doubled and scored on Spitz’s single to right field. They added to the lead with a run in the third on an RBI single by Grayson.

Pina led off the sixth with his first home run of the season to give State College a 3-0 lead.

The Spikes added a fourth run on Craig Aikin’s bases-loaded walk in the eighth and pushed their lead to 5-0 on Cole Lankford’s bases-loaded walk in the ninth. The Spikes drew seven walks in the win.

Ronnierd Garcia’s one-run single capped the scoring for State College.

The Spikes and Scrappers continue their series Friday at 7:05 p.m. Dailyn Martinez (0-1, 16.20 ERA) will be on the mound for State College, while Leandro Linares (0-0, 2.25) is set to start for Mahoning Valley.

Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Escudero was sent to Rookie-level Johnson City on Thursday.
